Happy & Free

I feel really lucky to be doing what I love. To get up at dawn and to can’t wait to do the practice again. To hop on the train for work and despite the angry pack elbowing their way through, to head to class with joy in my heart. And to be able to send light to all people and hope that one day they too will feel this utter fulfillment with what they do for a living. Yes, I feel privileged and so fortunate. But I also know that every being is entitled to this contentment. Happiness sleeps at the core of any human being. When it’s not there, we just need to remind ourselves to awaken it.
It is truly rewarding to observe the shades of happiness. Like a spectrum of the rainbow, every hue, adds up to create the next color. There is pleasure, satisfaction, contentment, fulfillment, joy, ecstasy and bliss. A lot of folks seek happiness in security and comfort. They often ponder: Do we need to feel secure, or do we wish to be fulfilled? Security is driven by fear, keeping us caught up in the known. Fulfillment nourishes the essence of who we are, calling for something far beyond what the current system can offer. Comfort, on the other hand, is another material veil that denies access to true bliss. It is vital to realize that happiness is not a pursuit. It is a state of physical and spiritual bliss that permeates every atom of the body, mind and soul – a state that connects us deeply to the inner and outer aspects of our self. It cannot be earned, or conquered. It can be tapped as we create a fertile ground for its manifestation. And it all narrows down to self-love. Once you choose to accept and appreciate yourself deeply and unconditionally you feel happy to be alive. You’re fully connected, energized and awake.
We still live in a culture where happiness is materially-driven, and self-pleasure is wrapped in fears, guilt and shame – a misconception still imprinted in our collective psyche. The distortion of religion has separated us from experiencing the state of ultimate bliss, denying us pure pleasure, and instead has conditioned us to believe that ultimate bliss is a disembodied, saint experience reserved only for the pious or virtuous. It is high time to bury this false dogma in the past and give everyone the choice and the chance to be happy and free.
In yoga happiness is considered one of the ten ethical codes that free you to take ownership of your life and direct it towards the fulfillment you seek. It is important to take some personal time to practice self-appreciation and self-love. To acknowledge all the blessings in life and assess whether our current work is aligned with our true purpose. Once we come into divine alignment our whole life puzzle pieces itself up instantly. We are not only content with what you do, but we radiate this fascination and joy and infect others, too. At its very root happiness feeds on altruism, service and wishing well to all. Then the personal is absorbed into the universal and we feel enraptured by being able to commune and share our joys.
