Yogea Murals
I’ve always been fascinated with the sacred geometry of yogic postures. And although they seem static, they radiate intense internal movement, often invisible to the naked eye. Since I started practicing 16 years ago, every time I would curve into an asana I felt vertically aligned and horizontally grounded. Yoga asanas are actually vortices of sound and movement that spiral into infinity, and the motion of their stillness is a poetic distillation of music and architecture. I’ve always had this idea of linking the postures through different bodies and creating a garland of breaths. Bodies strung together through the breath of love remind me of the Indian mala (the prayer beads). I recall that the very first idea for Yogea Murals, though, stems back from my childhood life on the island of Malta. While climbing one of the oldest Neolithic Temples at the age of 9, I was mesmerized by the statues of the Mother Goddess, which to me looked alive and vibrating with wisdom and energy. I remember telling my dad, that architecture sort of looked like “frozen music”, and music felt like “melted architecture.” It seemed like every sculpture was a live merging of the author and the subject of creation. While moving to New York in 2002 I found the perfect collaborators for this whimsical project, film-makers and producers, Ana & Kalin Ivanov who through video could “melt” the static tension of asana into “corporal music,” and through photography could “freeze” the fluid pulsations of movement into a snapshot of the floating present. The process was so thrilling, and rolled in a mood of collaboration and playfulness, that every participant became both the author and the clay that he/she molded into animated sculptures of mutual joy. Take a peek, and strike a pose to continue our mala…
