Yogea 7 Day Yoga Dare
I’ve had highs and lows in my 22-year yoga practice. I started as a zealot and blindly followed the rules. Waking up at 4:30, 3 hour long practice, no dairy, Satsang every night. Then I went to the other extreme. I was a rebel who broke the rules, and got lost in a free style flow with no structure. I didn’t feel like doing the same routine every day. So I tried all existing staples – restorative, Yin, empowering, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Anusara…But they too were somewhat patterned.
Then, I stumbled on a 7 Day chakra awakening program that looked very promising. As I followed the routines for every day of the week, I found myself doing the same gig – Sun Salutes forever, and the same poses, just ordered differently. And one day, while in headstand, it dawned on me. What don’t I design a practice that integrates the chakras and the planetary significance of each day of the week…Bingo!
And that day I had a breakthrough in my personal practice. I moved away from the plateau into a space of exploration and ingenuity. It felt so intuitive to reflect on a Monday, to act on a Tuesday, to connect on a Wednesday, to share on a Thursday, to love and beautify on a Friday, to stock energy on a Saturday and to celebrate bounty on a Sunday. And because every planet put the emphasis on different chakras and aspects of life, the sequencing turned out really artful and refreshing. Dozens of Innovasanas spawned. New bind variations juiced up the practice. Every day brought new insight into how to make my life healthier and happier.
It was a cool way to explore the interplay between the planets and the days of the week, the way the Babylonians did it. Harvesting the power of the planets every day of the week was so rewarding.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but according to the hermetic astrology of the Babylonians, Monday is actually not the best time to spin the wheel. It’s the Moon’s day, and we have to acknowledge that the Moon plays a major role in controlling the tides. So on a Monday, there’s no real need to push against the tide, but rather it’s a moment to deal with moods, emotions, time to unleash our intuition, step back and reflect on things.
The real kick comes on Tuesday, when we have to constructively engage and pursue our vision. It’s a day that’s meant to ease us into the rest of the week. We are back in productivity mode, likely more able to focus and take action. It is time to pursue our desires without running out there and spurring conflict.
And then on Wednesday we can ride the winged sandals of Mercury – the divine messenger. As we bring new information to our awareness, we can facilitate clear communication. There is a reason why Wednesday sits in the middle of the week, because it calls us to link the dots between activities of the other days. It is the ideal time to catch up on our correspondence, travel; time to seal deals and sign contracts.
Productivity usually peaks on Thursdays. For Jupiter lights a fire under us, and induces movement. As the guardian of the abstract mind, he helps us rule higher learning and allows us to receive guided wisdom. It’s a time to search for answers, but not necessarily to take risks.
And then on Friday, we can start winding down, and dive headfirst into the weeknight. And fall into the sweet embrace of Venus to taste the romance of living joyfully and aesthetically…
So we can digest everything that happened to us on Saturday and let it simmer. Some cultures consider Saturday a day of work or a time to catch up on unfinished errands. That’s one flip of the coin. But planet-wise, Saturday is ruled by Saturn – the slowest revolving planet around the Sun. So really, it is a time reconsider your life and de-clutter – remove those things that are not aligned with your highest purpose. It is a time to replenish, balance and reconnect with all that you desire.
And then comes the sunshine… Sunday is our time to celebrate and exuberate in all that we are bestowed with. And the wheel spins again and again. So we can partake in the cosmic interplay each day of the week. So we are charged with clarity, vitality and a sense of wellbeing.
